How
was Weight Watchers started?
The Weight Watchers program was created by Jean Nidetch in the
early 60’s. It began within her basement with friends. They would
meet once a week to discuss how to best lose weight. Today, that
group of friends has grown to millions of women and men around the
world. They now have the use of products and services of Weight
Watchers to lose unwanted pounds. An estimated one million people,
from Brazil to New Zealand, come together each week to help each
other to meet their weight-loss goals at Weight Watchers Meetings.
How
does Weight Watchers work?
When most people think of weight watchers they think of a point
system. Yes they still do a point system, but now offer a second
option that does not use points. This is how they both work. In
the point system they use point charts that assign certain amount
of points depending on what you eat and how much you eat. All food
items have a Weight Watchers points value based on its nutritional
content. People are assisted by a Weight Watchers points calculator
and recipes provided by the program. All members are encouraged
to attend group discussion and counseling sessions at local Weight
Watchers centers to help with lifestyle changes. They will provide
you with all related material or you can now do everything online.
The new core plan (no points plan) consists of mainly using more
control in the food choices that you make. It concentrates on eating
mainly wholesome foods from all the food groups and avoiding empty
calories. They do allow occasional treats, as long as they are in
moderation. As with the point system they encourage attending discussion
groups and meetings to help you work through lifestyle changes.
What are the Pro's of Weight Watchers?
This system has been proven to work well in helping people to achieve
a healthy weight and healthy lifestyle. One of the strongest things
about this program is the abundant amount of resources they provide.
Not only do they provide materials that you may always refer to
for help, but the extremely large amount of participants gives people
a support group that are going through it with you. Weight Watchers
does not require any drastic removal of any particular food group.
People are given total freedom of food choices. They provide proven
factual nutritional information to educate and inform people on
healthy eating habits. If one can absorb the info and learn how
to use the strategy outside the confines of the group they can be
very successful at maintaining their goal weight.
What
are the Con's of Weight Watchers?
Like all programs there is a down side to this diet. The main thing
most people soon notice is the long term cost in staying with Weight
Watchers. They offer their own food products at a higher cost then
buying items and creating ones own meals. Also there is a fee to
attend the meetings. Basically there are too many gimmicks attached
to this program. For those who get dependent on this system of support
have a hard time continuing the program without the meetings and
food products.
