How was the South
Beach Diet created?
The south beach diet was created by Arthur Agatston, MD, a cardiologist

How does the South
Beach Diet work?
This diet ,like other diets, consists of several stages. Not a
traditional low-carb plan. Your encouraged to choose the right carbohydrates
and fats. Carbohydrates; whole grains and certain fruits and vegetables.
Fats; such as olive and canola oil; and lean sources of protein.
During the first stage you get to eat normal-size portions of lean
meat, fish, eggs, reduced-fat cheese, nonfat yogurt, nuts, and plenty
of vegetables. They also allow snacks and deserts to be part of
there plan. Working in stage two you learn to reintroduce the right
carbohydrates. People get to reintroduce one carb to there meals
per week. During this step they want people to pay attention to
how the body reacts to the new carb. If there are no negatives to
the addition people can add a second choice the next week. This
continues until one can eat two-three servings of the right carbs
a day while continuing to lose weight. This stage lasts until you
reach the goal set. The last stage of this particular diet is all
about living a lifestyle that helps people to maintain there goal
that was set in the beginning.
What
are the Pro's of the South Beach Diet?
The South Beach Diet provides a tried and tested approach to losing
weight. This diet is not low-fat or low-carbohydrate which allows
for greater selection of food choices. Compared to the atkins or
other low-carb diets, this diet offers more flexability to enjoy
selections of foods for snacks and other deserts. Offering indulges
allows for easier continued participation in using the diet plan.
Many people have lost weight, lowered their cholesterol, reduced
their risk of heart disease and diabetes, as well as eliminated
cravings without always feeling hungry.
What are the Con's
of the South Beach Diet?
Like all structured diets there are things to consider when choosing
a diet plan. Of the negatives to this diet, people must understand
that initial weight loss can be from water weight loss from carbohydrate
restriction. Water weight loss is usually regained once carbohydrates
are reintroduced. Also this diet restricts soy from being used in
the first two weeks, making the positive snack addition useless
to people that can’t consume dairy product. Simply because most
snacks are dairy-based. The one other negative to this diet is the
lack of consideration to complex carbohydrates. These carbohydrates
are a main contributor to gaining weight because it is easy to over
consume these choices.
