There are many different fat loss drugs on the market today. While many of these drugs provide similar effects, they sometimes have different active chemicals. To get all the information, it is always best to consult your doctor before taking any prescription drugs. I would like to provide a quick reference on the active ingrediences to the popular fatloss drugs of today.

This section will describe some components of the following fat loss prescription drugs. If you would like furthur information on how to take, precautions, side effects and other info, simply click on the fatloss drug name.

Phentrmine:
The most popular fatloss drug on the market today. This drug is very similar to amphetamine in that it enhances the creation of dopamine. Dopamine effects the central nervous system by increasing heart rate and blood pressure. This effect is what decreases appetite

ACTIVE CHEMICAL: Phentermine

FATLOSS EFFECT: Decrease appitite by stimulating the part of the brain that controls hunger.

Adipex & Ionamin:
These diet pills are both appitite suppressents that work throught the central nervous system to control hunger. Adipex and Ionamin are together because they are the brand name versions of phentermine

ACTIVE CHEMICAL: Phentermine HCLe

FATLOSS EFFECT: Creates a chemical effect to the central nervous sytstem to decrease the sensation of hunger.

Tentuate:
Fatloss prescription that is used to treat obesity. It is also known as an anorectic or anorexigenic drug.

ACTIVE CHEMICAL: Diethylpropion

Bontril:
A brand name version of the drug Phendimetrazine. It is a oral appetite suppressant similar to an amphetamine. There are many other brand name drugs similar to this; Anorex-SR, Adipost, Appecon, Melfiat, Obezine, Plegine, Phendiet and Statobex.

ACTIVE CHEMICAL: Phendimetrazine

FATLOSS EFFECT: Not as effective as Phentermine, but works the same way. It causes a release of dopamine that stimulates the central nervous system and causes a reduction in hunger cravings.

Didrex:
A diet pill that is a sympathomimetic amine making it simular to an amphetamine. To be used short term to assist in weight loss.

ACTIVE CHEMICAL: Benzphetamine

FATLOSS EFFECT: Like most prescription diet drugs this medication also acts upon the central nervous system. It raises blood pressure and increases the heart rate. This creates a decrease in appetite--helping people to lose weight.

Xenical:
While most fatloss drugs are for the short term only, this is one that can be effective for several years. Xenical is to help fight extreme obesity. It also can help fight high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar.

ACTIVE CHEMICAL: Orlistat

FATLOSS EFFECT: This drug DOES NOT suppress appetite. It does however block a certain amount of fat from being absobed into the body. Approximatly 30% of food eaten passes through the body without being digested.

Meridia:
Much like other appetite suppressants, Meridia makes you feel full and eat less.

ACTIVE CHEMICAL: Sibutramine

FATLOSS EFFECT: This fat loss drug blocks the re-uptake of brain chemicals called serotonin and norepinephrine. These chemicals help regulate the sense of fullness. Having a sense of fullness should help people to feel satisfied with less food.
